Are online fit notes legally valid in the UK?
Yes. Under UK law, employees do not need to provide any certificate for the first 7 days of absence — this period is covered by self-certification. For absences lasting more than 7 days, a fit note (formally an “Statement of Fitness for Work”) is required, and it must be signed by a registered medical practitioner.
Our UK fit notes are issued by Dr. Sunjay Kumar, fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC 7041207). The fit note complies with the format introduced under the Fit for Work scheme and includes two options as required: “is not fit for work” or “may be fit for work with adjustments.”
Fit notes do not need to be issued following a face-to-face appointment. NHS guidance has confirmed that doctors may issue fit notes based on a remote assessment, including online consultations. Our process meets this standard.

Do I have to accept an online fit note?
Yes. UK law does not require a fit note to come from an NHS GP or an in-person appointment. Any registered medical practitioner can issue a fit note following an assessment. Our fit notes are issued by a GMC-registered doctor and carry the same legal weight as one issued by an NHS GP.
What is the 7-day self-certification rule?
For absences of 7 calendar days or fewer, employees in the UK do not need a fit note. They can self-certify using a SC2 form or equivalent. A Sicknote.com fit note is relevant for absences that go beyond 7 days, or where the employee or employer wants documentation for a shorter period for their own records.
What if verification returns “not found”?
Double-check the reference number against the fit note — it follows the format SN-YYYYMMDD-XXXXXX. If the problem persists, contact us at [email protected] and we will confirm within one business day.
Can I contact the issuing doctor directly?
Queries about a fit note should go through our support team first. We can confirm or clarify details within 24 hours on business days. Direct contact with the doctor is available for clinical queries that cannot be resolved through support.
